Medium drywall patch: how a hole up to a foot across gets fixed

A hole in the wall the size of a fist or a dinner plate is too big for a dab of spackle and too small to replace a whole sheet. Doorknob impacts, a removed wall fixture, a plumbing access hole or an old anchor that took a chunk of wall with it all leave damage of about this size. A proper patch takes several stages with drying time between them, which is why it rarely happens in a single sitting. This guide explains the process, the limits of what a patch includes, and what to expect on the finish.

Signs you need a medium patch

A medium patch covers damage up to about twelve inches across, roughly a square foot. Typical causes are a door handle punched through the wall, a hole left when a wall-mounted television or a large shelf was removed, an access hole cut for plumbing or wiring, or a section of wall damaged by moving furniture.

Small dents and screw holes can be filled with a simple compound, and anything much larger than a foot usually needs a partial sheet replaced instead. In between, the damage is too big to bridge with filler alone because there is nothing behind it to support the compound.

Before booking, check what caused the damage. If a stain, soft spot or crumbling around the edge suggests water, the leak has to be found and fixed first. Patching over a wet or damaged wall just hides the problem and the patch will fail. Also note whether the wall is smooth or textured, since texture affects the finishing stage.

How a patch works and why it takes visits

Drywall compound, often called joint compound or mud, shrinks as it dries. That is why a proper repair is built up in thin layers, with each layer left to dry before the next is applied. Drying takes time, and it depends on the thickness of the coat, the temperature and the humidity in the room, which can be slow in a damp basement or a cold room.

The standard sequence is to cut the damaged area to a clean shape, fit a support behind the opening or use a self-adhesive mesh or a backing board, then place a piece of drywall cut to size. The seams are taped and covered with compound. Two or three thin coats follow, each sanded lightly when dry, to blend the patch smoothly into the surrounding wall. A final primer coat seals the repair so paint sits evenly on it.

Because of the drying time between coats, a medium patch is generally done over two visits. This is normal practice rather than a sign of slow work, and it produces a much better result than trying to rush the layers.

What the visit includes and what it does not

The patch price covers the repair itself: cutting out the damage, fitting the new piece, taping, coating, sanding and priming the repaired spot. It does not include repainting the wall unless that has been quoted separately. Fresh primer is not the same as a finished paint color, and new paint on one patch often shows against old paint that has faded. To get an invisible result, the whole wall, or at least a corner-to-corner section, needs repainting, which is a separate job.

If your wall has a texture, matching it is an added step. Common textures include orange peel, knockdown, stomp and popcorn, and matching each takes a slightly different technique. It is worth being clear that texture matching is a close match, not a perfect one. Newly applied texture will rarely be identical to a texture that has aged and been painted many times.

Clearing the area in front of the wall and laying down protection is helpful, since sanding produces fine dust.

What moves the price within the range

The size of the damage is the main factor, and this range is for damage up to about a foot. Location matters: a patch at ceiling height, in a stairwell or behind a large piece of furniture takes more setup. Wall texture is the other big variable. A smooth wall is the simplest. Textured walls need matching, and heavier textures such as popcorn take more skill and materials.

The condition of the wall around the damage also plays a part. If the surrounding drywall is crumbly, water damaged or loosely attached, more of it has to be cut back and replaced, which enlarges the patch. If you have more than one patch to fix in the same visit, additional patches are priced at a lower add-on rate than a separate visit.

Patch or replace the sheet?

For damage up to a foot, a patch is the right repair. It preserves the rest of the wall, involves less mess and is far quicker than replacing a section. Once the damage grows to a large area, or when several holes are close together, cutting out and replacing part of a sheet can be neater than layering many patches. Very large sections would also mean fresh seams, taping and texturing across a bigger area.

Water damage is a separate matter. If the drywall has been wet, mold can be present behind the surface, and the source of moisture has to be dealt with first. A pro can point you toward the right next step once they see the wall.
